Bariatric Psychological Evaluations

Bariatric psychological evaluations help physicians and insurance companies determine eligible candidates for weight loss and bariatric surgeries.

That’s because the most difficult part of this process happens after the surgery.

Given the immense amount of time, effort, and cost involved, it’s important for clients to mentally prepare before undergoing their weight loss or bariatric surgery.  A bariatric psychological assessment allows a licensed psychologist to identify any current mental health conditions that can affect post-op outcomes. These pre-surgical psychological evaluations also pinpoint emotional barriers that may prove challenging after surgery.

A healthy mindset is an integral factor of a successful weight loss journey.

Based in Miami, FL, our licensed psychologists can conduct these pre-surgical and bariatric evaluations in both English and Spanish. They have specialized training in health and medical psychology which focuses on the role of thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors play in maintaining physical health.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • 60-minute initial interview with a licensed psychologist
  • 15 minutes of test administration
  • 20-30 minutes for test scoring and report writing
  • 15-minute final feedback session with the client to review report and answer questions

Total Time for completion = 2 hours

The cost of a pre-surgical or bariatric psychological evaluation is $360 USD

Probably. However, our psychologists are out-of-network (OON) providers, which means they don’t accept insurance. You may still be able to work with us if your insurance plan has OON benefits. Here’s how it works:

You pay us directly and we’ll give you a receipt called a superbill that you’ll send to your insurance company. Your insurance company will determine either #1 apply the amount on the superbill towards your deductible, or #2 if you’ve met your annual deductible, you will be reimbursed a percentage of the amount on the superbill.

In addition to lengthy clinical history and a review of medical records, you will be asked to complete behavioral and emotional questionnaires. The whole process takes about 2 hours total.

Yes. Our evaluations address the client’s clinical history, explain all the test administered and results, draw conclusions that integrate the clinical history and test results, provide any applicable diagnoses, and offer recommendations and next steps to follow through with related to the surgical procedure.

About 1 year on average. It’s really up to who is using your evaluation’s results, though.
