Finding a Therapist in Miami

Miami keeps making the lists as one of the nation’s worst cities for dating, traffic, raising a family, getting a job… the list is endless.  No matter what the critics say, there’s a lot of perks to living in this little slice of paradise.  But just because life in Miami isn’t terrible, it doesn’t mean the la life doesn’t happen.  When those times hit, you need some support to get through them.

You’ve been thinking about seeing someone.  Professionally, that is.

If you’re looking for a life coach, therapist, or psychologist in Miami – I’d like to help you find the right someone for you. (Don’t know the difference among these professions? Click here to learn more.)  Maybe you went to therapy before, but the therapist didn’t get you.  S/he just sat there, nodding, and asking, “And how did that make you feel?”  Obviously, not much better or you’d have kept going to see them, right?  Now you’re back in the same jam that sent you looking for help the last time.

Did you ever consider you were seeing the wrong psychotherapist?

You don’t want to go back to him/her, but you’re confused who to pick from the long list of name your insurance company gave you or from all the profiles on Psychology Today.  You’ve got no clue who to pick with so many psychotherapists in Miami and neighboring Brickell, Coral Gables, South Miami, Pinecrest, and Doral.  Here are some things to consider when deciding on a therapist.

    • Expertise – Find someone that specializes in your particular issue.  Don’t settle for someone that just treats depression.  Find someone that has treated depression in former male corporate executives resulting from job loss prior to retirement.  Think that’s impossible to find?  It’s not.  Every mental health professional has a specific demographic that s/he loves to work with.
    • Price per Session and On-going Availability – Therapy is an investment of your time and money.  You want to select someone that fits your budget so you can meet consistently with them to make the most of psychotherapy.
    • Proximity to You – Local traffic being what it is, a 3-mile drive can quickly become a 45-minute ordeal.  Pick someone that’s located near places that you frequently go to so therapy can integrate easily into your routine.  It will reduce cancellations and missed appointment fees.
    • Insurance – Decide whether you want to see someone that takes your insurance (i.e. in-network provider) or someone that doesn’t.  If they don’t, find out if your insurance company will reimburse you for sessions after the fact.  Read this to learn more.
